About Our 3D PPE Project
At the start of 2020 "adventure," a few members of the Mini Museum team turned our skills for making things to addressing the shortage of equipment for medical professionals, first responders, and front-line service workers.
So far, we've donated thousands of individual pieces of 3D-printed equipment to hospitals across the United States and beyond.
Of all the items we are making, tension-release "ear saver" straps are the most in-demand item. As the name suggests, these straps alleviate the constant pressure associated with wearing a typical mask for many hours. Nearly anyone who's had to wear a mask for more than two hours will see the necessity of these straps.
To expand our production and continue delivering these items for free to those who are working so hard to help so many, we've decided to begin making a portion of our ear saver production capacity to the general public.
Funds from the sale of these items will be used to pay for additional filament, more 3D printers, and shipping. We'll also be making in-kind donations to other makers who are on the same mission.
"How big is the strap?"
The strap measures 6.25" (16cm) long. There are four (4) adjustment points along each edge, providing a total of sixteen (16) different tension settings.
"Are there different sizes?"
Not at this time, but the standard size should work for most people.
"Can I request a specific color?"
Not at this time. Filament is in short supply so we're using whatever we can lay our hands on.
"Where did you get the design?"
This design was created by Ken Lord. His original files are available on Thingiverse if you'd like to print them yourself: https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:4249113
"Has this design been tested in a clinical setting?"
Yes, and that's one reason why we selected it for our own production. The US National Institutes of Health (NIH) maintains an online exchange of 3D printed device designs. You can read more about testing on their site: https://3dprint.nih.gov/discover/3dpx-013410
That said, this is a 3D printed item and should not be considered "medical grade" equipment.
"What kind of plastic are you using and how do I care for this item?"
Our ear savers are printed with PLA filament. This filament will biodegrade over time, but it is also very durable. As for care, you can wash these ear savers with normal soap and water. Alcohol-based cleaners are also fine for disinfecting.
Do not place these items into high-temperature sanitization equipment or dishwashers or they will melt.
"What kind of mask will this work with?"
These ear savers are designed to work with pretty much any "over-the-ear" mask with elastic straps. They are not designed to work with N95 or K95 masks which wrap around your head. Cloth masks will also work if they have straps designed to be worn over the ears.
Note: Rippling muscles and head scars are not included. In all seriousness, can you imagine how hard it is to take a decent selfie of the back of your head?
"When will my ear savers ship?"
We are making numerous batches of ear-savers each and every day. So, in general, public orders of "ear savers" within 3-5 business days of purchase. If you purchase other items with the "ear savers" all items will ship together.
"Is there a discount for buying more than one?"
Yes, we are currently offering a "buy four get one free" discount. To activate the discount, add multiples of five (5) ear savers to your cart and the discount will be applied automatically at checkout.
"Can I send one as a gift to a family member?"
Of course! Just provide their shipping details at checkout.
"Is it possible to request a donation for my hospital/fire station/etc?"
Absolutely! Here is a link to the form: https://forms.gle/hsb9Pxe9yRQXRWEJ9
