Stay at one of the Beatles' Childhood Homes!

The Casbah Coffee Club
Post Author - Ellis Nolan
For fans of the Fab Four, having “A Day in the Life” of the band’s early years is as easy as booking a Bed and Breakfast. Since this past summer, original Beatles drummer Pete and brother Roag Best have been hosting guests at the Casbah Coffee Club, where the Beatles played some of their first shows, while 25 Upton Green, childhood home of George Harrison, has been available for stays since 2022.
George Harrison was born February 25th, 1943 in Liverpool, England, and started playing guitar when he was about 14. When Harrison was 15, he met John Lennon and Paul McCartney, who, impressed with his playing, invited him to join their band, known then as “The Quarrymen.” The Quarrymen would regularly rehearse at Harrison’s childhood home at 25 Upton Green. The band name would eventually be changed to “The Beatles” and the lads from Liverpool would be joined temporarily by drummer Pete Best in 1960.

In 1959, Mona Best, Pete’s mother, opened up a music venue in the basement of her Liverpool mansion called the “Casbah Coffee Club.” She had bought the house in 1954 using winnings from a miraculous horse race bet, which she had pawned all of her jewelry to place. The band slated to play opening night at the Casbah was the “Les Stewart Quartet,” in which George Harrison played guitar. The quartet disbanded shortly after the gig, and Harrison brought in The Quarrymen as a replacement. They would play 13 shows at the Casbah as the Quarrymen and over 40 more as The Beatles.
As of June 2024, both properties are options on AirBnB for those visiting Liverpool. The Casbah is run by brothers Pete and Roag Best, who also give tours of the basement venue. In 2006, it was given Grade II listing, an honor awarded to locations in England with particular historical or cultural significance. 25 Upton Green, now owned by Ken Lambert, was sold for £171,000 in November 2022. Both offer a memorable and cozy place to rest after a hard day’s night!

Learn About the Tiny Aircraft That Turn Sunlight Into Flight!
Of the five layers of Earth’s atmosphere, the mesosphere (the third layer from Earth’s surface) is a height at which traditional aircraft have, thus far, been unable to reach on their own power. Generally beginning about 154,000 feet above sea level, even the world record for highest aircraft altitude falls about 20,000 feet short. However, a newly developing technology may change this reality, and it involves aircraft that punch high above their weight.

Learn About The Newly Discovered Species of Early Humans!
In studying early human ancestors, known as “hominids,” anthropologists have historically found much wider variations from specimen to specimen than expected, particularly among other paleontological fields. A recent study argues that certain groups of hominid fossils previously thought to be an already discovered species constitute a new one entirely.

Learn About Iron Age Mummy Tattoos!
Tattoos have been a popular form of individual and societal expression for centuries around the world, making them a focal point of study for anthropologists and archaeologists. Unfortunately, the oldest examples are rarely preserved well enough for deep study, since skin usually decomposes before fossilization. In one recent case, however, new technology allowed researchers to draw new conclusions about the tattoos of one fascinating specimen: a well-preserved mummy.

The Artist Behind the Macintosh: Susan Kare and Apple Computers
While the two Steves, Jobs and Wozniak, are the most well known faces behind Apple computers, equally important to the products and culture of the company were those who crafted the experience of using their computers through design. The most notable of these visual architects was Susan Kare, a designer responsible for “humanizing” Macintosh computers.
