DINOSAUR FOOD - CYCAD FOSSIL
The palm-shaped fronds of the cycad plant are an iconic piece of the dinosaur landscape for good reason. These plants were an incredibly important food source to the largest land animals to ever walk the planet. Thanks to an incredibly efficient gut biome, herbivorous sauropods, ceratopsians, and all manner of dinosaurs were able to digest and absorb precious nutrients from this group of plants.
This specimen is a piece of a cycad plant fossil, a classic "Dinosaur Food." It measures around 1/2" and was recovered from the Lance Formation in Wyoming. It is estimated to be about 67,000,000 years old.
DINOSAUR GASTROLITH - GUT STONE
Also known as gut or gizzard stones, gastroliths are common digestive aids among amphibians, reptiles, birds, and dinosaurs. their primary function is to help grind food matter.
In dinosaurs, gastroliths are usually associated with sauropods, though they have also been discovered in ornithomimids, oviraptors, and some ornithischians. This Jurassic Period gastrolith measures around 2" to 4" and comes from the Morrison Formation in Colorado.
DINOSAUR DUNG - COPROLITE
Scientifically speaking, coprolites are fossilized poop. Over millions of years, minerals, such as chalcedony and quartz, replaced the original organic material. This process creates a rich, colorful matrix that allows us to study the diet and lifestyle of long-extinct creatures.
Coprolites can come from reptiles, dinosaurs, and even ancient mammals. Depending on their origin, coprolites may contain a variety of minerals such as phosphorus and calcium. Scientists use these trace fossils to help identify the species responsible for the droppings and to learn more about their diet.
This specimen is a fragment of agatized coprolite around 1.5 to 2.5" in size. It comes from the Morrison Formation in Utah and is attributed to a 150,000,000 year old sauropod, a long necked herbivorous dinosaur.
