Archaeologists Discover Tomb of an Unknown Pharaoh!

In a second groundbreaking discovery in this region in 2025, archaeologists in Abydos, Egypt have discovered the lost tomb of an ancient Egyptian king. There’s one problem though: they’re not sure which one.
The team that dug up the tomb believes it was built in the late 1600s to early 1500s BCE, potentially by a dynasty of Egyptians shrouded in mystery. During this period, known as the Second Intermediate Period, Egypt was split between the regions of Lower Egypt and Upper Egypt. Upper Egypt, the counterintuitively named Southern region of the country and where Abydos is located, was ruled by the Abydos dynasty, of which little is known to archaeologists and historians. Lower Egypt, the Northern region, was ruled by the Hyksos, an ethnic group thought to be Canaanic in origin who would eventually unseat the Abydos dynasty in 1600 BCE.
Another chapter in the Abydos dynasty was illuminated by archaeologists in 2014, when the tomb of King Senebkay was discovered in the region. Researchers believe this tomb is potentially that of his predecessor, however, the name inscribed in the walls of the tomb is illegible. To add insult to injury, the tomb was damaged by ancient raiders, who also stole the sarcophagus and mummy of the king.

That’s not to say the find is of no value to researchers. The tomb found earlier this year is considerably larger than the one discovered in 2014. Its main chamber consists of limestone construction, with multiple vaults made of mud bricks. Around the same time this tomb was discovered, another team of researchers uncovered a pottery workshop from Egypt’s Byzantine era that was converted into a cemetery in the 1700s. Both of these finds have given scientists a rare look into the history of the region, where evidence is quite sparse.
