Stay at one of the Beatles' Childhood Homes!

The Casbah Coffee Club
Post Author - Ellis Nolan
For fans of the Fab Four, having “A Day in the Life” of the band’s early years is as easy as booking a Bed and Breakfast. Since this past summer, original Beatles drummer Pete and brother Roag Best have been hosting guests at the Casbah Coffee Club, where the Beatles played some of their first shows, while 25 Upton Green, childhood home of George Harrison, has been available for stays since 2022.
George Harrison was born February 25th, 1943 in Liverpool, England, and started playing guitar when he was about 14. When Harrison was 15, he met John Lennon and Paul McCartney, who, impressed with his playing, invited him to join their band, known then as “The Quarrymen.” The Quarrymen would regularly rehearse at Harrison’s childhood home at 25 Upton Green. The band name would eventually be changed to “The Beatles” and the lads from Liverpool would be joined temporarily by drummer Pete Best in 1960.

In 1959, Mona Best, Pete’s mother, opened up a music venue in the basement of her Liverpool mansion called the “Casbah Coffee Club.” She had bought the house in 1954 using winnings from a miraculous horse race bet, which she had pawned all of her jewelry to place. The band slated to play opening night at the Casbah was the “Les Stewart Quartet,” in which George Harrison played guitar. The quartet disbanded shortly after the gig, and Harrison brought in The Quarrymen as a replacement. They would play 13 shows at the Casbah as the Quarrymen and over 40 more as The Beatles.
As of June 2024, both properties are options on AirBnB for those visiting Liverpool. The Casbah is run by brothers Pete and Roag Best, who also give tours of the basement venue. In 2006, it was given Grade II listing, an honor awarded to locations in England with particular historical or cultural significance. 25 Upton Green, now owned by Ken Lambert, was sold for £171,000 in November 2022. Both offer a memorable and cozy place to rest after a hard day’s night!

Lyndon Johnson: Architect of the U.S. Space Program
The Space Race is an era etched in the mythos of the United States. The starting gun, fired October 4th, 1957, as the Soviet Union launched the first-ever artificial satellite into space, was quickly answered by President John F. Kennedy a month later. In a special session of Congress, he set forth the goal of landing a man on the moon before the decade was out. If Kennedy was Jason on this voyage to the stars, Vice President Lyndon B. Johnson was his Argus, constructing the means of transport long before this challenge was issued and long before his superior’s assassination tumbled the nation into darkness.
