AMAZING AMMONITE
Ammonites are an extinct group of cephalopods which entered the fossil record 400 million years ago. They survived several mass extinction events, including the Permian–Triassic "Great Dying" which wiped out 96% of all marine species. They finally succumbed during the Cretaceous-Paleogene extinction event 66 million years ago, which also wiped out the dinosaurs.
The Amazing Ammonite Pocket Fossil is a display box that contains a small, <1 in fossil shell, a folding informational card about the ammonite, authenticity details, and a beautiful illustration of the prehistoric creature!
CAMPO DEL CIELO MINI METEORITE
The Campo del Cielo meteorite is an IAB meteorite that is thought to have formed 4.5 billion years ago during the creation of our solar system. With a total recovered weight at 220,562 lbs (100,000 kg) it is possibly the heaviest meteorite to have ever been recovered on Earth.
The meteorite broke apart in the atmosphere and fell in the Chaco and Santiago del Estero Provinces of northwest Argentina. Radiocarbon dating of charred trees near the crater field placed the impact at around 2500 BCE. The oral history of indigenous groups informs us that the fall from the sky was witnessed and ignited massive forest fires.
This specimen is a sample of Campo del Cielo meteorite from Argentina. Like all IAB meteorites, it is made of meteoritic iron and reflects slightly in the light.
MIGHTY MOSASAUR
If we look first to the sea, the Mesozoic Era might not be known as the Age of Dinosaurs, but rather as the Age of Marine Reptiles. Beginning with the appearance of the dolphin-shaped Ichthyosaurs in the Triassic Period, the rising seas of the Jurassic Period gave way to a wider variety of large predators including the long-necked Plesiosaurs and Pliosaurs to the powerful Mosasaurs.
Since the first Mosasaur skull was discovered in 1764, our knowledge of this large family of marine reptiles has come primarily from skeletal remains. Mosasaurs ranged in size from 1.1m (3.3ft) to 17.4m (57 ft). Their skulls were flexible and their jaws are double-hinged. While this arrangement probably allowed a Mosasaur to swallow prey whole, the alignment of a Mosasaur's teeth with "bony crypts" to protect emerging teeth also suggests Mosasaurs likely crushed bones as frequently as they tore into flesh.
The Mighty Mosasaur Pocket Fossil is a display box that contains a small, ~1cm fossil tooth, a folding informational card about the Mosasaur, authenticity details, and a beautiful illustration of the prehistoric creature!
BRACHIOPOD
Brachiopods first appeared in the Cambrian Explosion’s massive radiation of life and still exist today. Also called lamp-shells, these invertebrates are highly diverse but are usually immobile, remaining stationary on the ocean floor. Across 12,000 plus extinct species and about 350 living, the core body plan of the brachiopod remains much the same: a bivalved shell with an inner musculature. They can be distinguished from clams with their lophophore, an appendage that emerges from the shell to filter feed before retracting back inside. This simple but effective body plan has allowed brachiopods to thrive from the Cambrian Explosion to today’s oceans.
These brachiopods are Mucrospirifer thedfordensis Ontario's Widder Formation, dating to the Middle Devonian Period around 380-390 million years ago.
CRINOID STAR STICK
Sometimes referred to as feather stars or sea lilies, Crinoids are members of an extended and very ancient family of sea animals known as echinoderms. Echinoderms date back as far as the Cambrian period some 541,000,000 years ago. They include such varied animals as sea urchins, sea cucumbers, and starfish.
The evolution of crinoids was part of another explosion of complex life on Earth during the Ordovician, which resulted in most of the animal or metazoan body plans we know today. Early crinoids looked like undersea flowers, with root-like feet, a segmented columnar stalk, and feathery arms at the head which could filter and toss floating food towards the mouth.
The Crinoid Star Stick comes in a display box that contains a small crinoid columnal, a folding informational card with authenticity details and a beautiful illustration of the prehistoric creature!
