Martian Dust Storm NWA 7397 - Martian Meteorite

Martian Dust Storm NWA 7397 - Martian Meteorite

At its closest, Mars is about 40 million miles away from Earth, but sometimes a little piece of the red planet comes far nearer. Martian meteorites form when a large impactor strikes the surface, ejecting material that becomes a new meteorite in turn. From these space rocks, we can learn much about our neighbor in the solar system.

This Martian Meteorite Dust Storm specimen is an acrylic disk crafted with material from the shergottite meteorite NWA 7397. This meteorite was discovered in 2012 and contains the basaltic rock that makes up Mars's planet-wide dust storms.
