Beginning life as the adopted son of working-class parents, Steven Paul Jobs rose to the height of global business. His companies revolutionized several different industries and his countercultural vision reshaped much of the modern technological world. Steve Jobs is most famous for founding Apple with his business partner and engineering wizard Steve Wozniak. Their first product, the Apple-1, was just a raw motherboard.

As they found greater success, Jobs partnered with the Japanese designer Issey Miyake to create a company uniform for Apple employees, inspired by the artist's work making employee vests for Sony. The idea did not go over so well with Apple employees, but Jobs and Miyake ended up making a uniform all the same—the iconic black turtleneck.

This specimen is a piece of fabric from one of Jobs's turtlenecks. It comes from the 1991 PC Forum gathering, where he promoted his new computer company, NeXT. It was an early appearance of his iconic style, which was later gifted to his personal assistant and eventually purchased at public auction.

Eschewing the methods of the past, Seymour Cray created a new kind of supercomputer company using just four main principles: simplicity, size, discipline, and cooling. Cray's innovations yielded a machine that was so advanced that a bidding war ensued for the first machine off the line. This made the Cray-1 the first commercially successful supercomputer and launched the legend that became Cray Research.

This specimen is a section of a board board was originally part of the Cray-1 Supercomputer installed at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. Introduced in 1975, the complete Cray-1 weighed 5.5 tons and was capable of 80 million floating-point operations per second.

Both a board section and IC chip are included in this bundle, enclosed together in a gem jar. It is important to note that the boards were removed after the Cray-1 was decommissioned. As a result, some chips pictured have later serial dates since newer boards were installed to replace failed boards over time.

Ten years after Samuel F.B. Morse sent the first telegraph message in 1844, the world was hooked on the new form of rapid communication, which spanned mountains, rivers, and national boundaries. The Atlantic Ocean, however, seemed like an impossible hurdle. To span it would require a line able to stand up to 2,000 miles of water without breakage. Building a cable long and sturdy enough to suffice was a madman's dream... and that's exactly who stepped up to the task.

The first transatlantic telegraph cable to implemented in 1858, thanks to the project's architect, Cyrus West Field. He wasn't sure that his ambitions would succeed, but when the cable was finally connected, the world was brought a little closer together. For the first time in history, Europe and the Americas could speak in a matter of minutes.

This specimen is a section of that surplus cable from Field's project. It was originally purchased by Charles Tiffany of Tiffany & Co with the intent of selling souvenirs and can be now part of your collection.
