More about the SUPER COOL beginning of the universe
The James Webb telescope is changing a lot about what we know about our universe. The hyper-sensitive instruments on the space telescope are able to detect incredible information about distant galaxies and in a way, even travel through time.
The stars we see in the night sky are many lightyears away, and since light travels at a set speed, we're actually seeing these objects as they were in the past. The Webb telescope is far more powerful than the human eye and capable of receiving data from galaxies billions of lightyears away... meaning what it sees is billions of years old. Some of these galaxies are so old, they may even be some of the earliest to exist after the Big Bang.
Thanks to the different spectra of light the telescope has captured, we've learned that these elder galaxies are surrounded by hydrogen and helium gas, which is pulled in to create young stars. This suggests that the formation of galaxies may rely on intergalactic material.
This image, from NASA illustrator Joseph Olmsted, conceptualizes the formation of one of these early galaxies. We thought it was a fitting way to share our Father's Day Discount Sale!
